Sedco to Commence Telecommunication Venture
Sabah Economic Development Corporation (SEDCO) is set to expand its roles in stimulating the State development with the formation of a telecommunication facilities and services company that will commence operations by end of 2010. Newly established SEDCO Communication Sdn. S.COMM's is a joint venture company of SEDCO and Vast Meridian Sdn. Bhd., a local Bumiputera company who will also act as consultant, executer and manager of the project. Its major activities will include fibre optic business, bandwidth fibre rental and installation & management of telecommunication tower. S.COMM's acquired the Network Facilities and Network Services licences from Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission in May 2010.
S.COMM's objectives amongst others are to increase the capacity and the data transfer speed of the existing areas equipped with broadband facilities, to extend broadband networks to more rural areas and to assist in achieving the 50% broadband penetration in Sabah by 2012.
It will also facilitate the implementation of Sabah Development Corridor (SDC) by way of providing efficient and cost-effective telecommunication facilities for related business and industries, and support the aspiration for the accessible-anytime, anywhere-Government.
S.COMM's implementation for this year is to develop networks along the West-East route (Kota-Kinabalu to Tawau) with Kota Kinabalu as the hub. This would provide a positive impact on the pace of industries along the corridor such as palm oil, fisheries and tourism. At the same time, Kota Kinabalu will be experiencing a boost in capacity and access speed with the completion of its metro backhaul.
